Children of Hero’s Program

Honoring the late Deputy Jeff Mitchell of the Sacramento Sheriff's Department and Children of Hero's Wish Program
The late Deputy Jeff Mitchell Sacramento Sheriff's Department

This program was created to enrich the lives of children who have lost a law enforcement parent in a “line of duty” death. We have offered to families of these children the opportunity to have their wishes granted and to provide an experience that we hope will be a source of inspiration and hope for children who are suffering from the traumatic and tragic loss of their law enforcement parent. It is our hope that the wish granting is a positive reinforcement for these children that their parent will always be loved, cherished and honored as the hero that they are. This program was inspired by the tragic death of Deputy Jeff Mitchell of the Sacramento Sheriff’s Department and was developed by Deputy Mitchell’s widow Crystal Mitchell.

CPYC hosted several kids at every home game of the San Diego Chargers. We partnered with the San Diego Police Department Star/PAL organization in providing this program. Kids were selected from a large group of low-income families that live within San Diego County. San Diego Police Officers and Star/PAL staff transported the kids and set up a pre-game barbecue before they entered the stadium for a Chargers home game. Chargers Punter Mike Scifres generously donated tickets for the kids to attend the games throughout the season. We thank Mike Scifres for his tremendous contribution to the kids in the San Diego community. With the Chargers moving to Los Angeles, we hope to be able to continue this program in the future targeting Los Angeles youth. Stay tuned!

CPYC partnered with the Oakland Raiders of the National Football League to host up to 180 kids per home game throughout the season in a fun-filled day at a Raider game. This opportunity was offered to “at risk” kids throughout the State and included tickets to the game, a hosted lunch gathering in a safe area of McAfee Coliseum prior to the game, guest speakers and mentors from law enforcement agencies and professional athletes including many “Raider Legends” and CPYC Celebrity Advisors. Thousands of youth attending these games and we are extremely proud of the success of this program, which was our very first “Game Day for Kids” activity.

Oakland A’s Home Run Reader Program

California Police Youth Charities has partnered in the past with professional sports teams such as the Oakland A’s of Major League Baseball, in an effort to reach out to kids in Northern California in a very unique way.

CPYC sponsored the Home Run Readers Program, which is a curriculum-based reading program that was implemented in 150 elementary schools facilitated by individual teachers within 15 of California’s counties. Children were rewarded for their outstanding reading accomplishments with tickets to A’s games, A’s/CPYC bookmarks, and A’s caps as well as other Oakland A’s items. Many of the schools were treated to personal appearances by A’s players, coaches, and front office staff as well as uniformed police officers who read to the kids in the classroom. Even the owner of the Oakland A’s volunteered to read to kids. This program ran for several years and was a tremendous success in reaching kids in a positive way. We hope to partner with other professional teams in many sports to accomplish the same goals.
